*Featured on last week’s show was a rare collection of musical pieces inspired by the paintings of the late Spanish artist, Salvador Dali. The album Dali: The Endless Enigma is composed of unique tracks from Michael Stearns, Michel Huygen, Walter Holland, Djam Karet, Loren Nerell, Klaus Schulze, Bo Tomlyn, one Steve Roach solo track, and two Steve Roach / Robert Rich collaborations. The album was conceived by Loren Nerell and Steve Roach. The pieces were created by some of the more adventurous artists working in the medium at the time, who were asked to create new works based on their favorite Dali paintings. The artists had to understand the wash elements in Dali's paintings very well, where one image, or the appearance of an image, gives way to something else.

Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was a celebrated surrealist artist of the 20th Century. Dali possessed excellent painting skills, an extraordinary imagination, and his works were technically brilliant. Salvador Dali was also an excellent showman, and had a love for outrageous and provocative acts. To view Dali’s works and to learn more about him visit this website: http://www.abcgallery.com/D/dali/dalibio.html.

*A special thanks goes out to Michael Brown for covering for Mary Flynn for the last two weeks because of illness. Thank you very much for putting in extra time!

*The Blues Foundation’s 30th annual Blues Music Awards announced the nominees for the awards show coming up on May 7, 2009. The organization is based in Memphis, Tennessee. This event typically features performances by the various nominees and can run as long as seven hours! This year’s very diverse nominees range from 10 years of age (Taya Perry, drummer of the Homemade Jamz Band) to 93 (David “Honeyboy” Edwards, guitarist)!

The West coast-based group, the Mannish Boys, led in nominations with a total of six. Guitarist Elvin Bishop, pianist Eden Brent, singer Janiva Magness, Curtis Salgado, and the singer/songwriter Watermelon Slim were close behind with four nominations. Legendary blues guitarist Buddy Guy was nominated for three awards and B.B. King was nominated for two.

The Homemade Jamz Band features vocalist and guitarist Ryan Perry (16), bassist Kyle Perry (14), and drummer Taya Perry (10). This family band is the youngest Blues Music Award nominees in history thus far. They are claiming fame from their debut album, Pay Me No Mind.

Sadly, several notable blues artists died during 2008 and among them were guitarists Sean Costello and Jeff Healey. Costello received two nominations for his 2008 album, We Can Get Together and Healey received one nomination for his 2008 album, Mess Of Blues.

Alligator Records, a popular blues music label, led the nomination list with five separate hit album releases including some from artists Janiva Magness and Michael Burks. Delta Groove Music fell into second with four hit album nominations including artists Elvin Bishop, the Mannish Boys, and Cedric Burnside and Lightnin’ Malcolm.

Also, for the first time in its 30 years of existence, The Blues Foundation is honoring blues-rock artists in their own category. Some of the nominees include Gary Moore, Jeff Healey, Michael Burks, Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King, Sonny Landreth, and Walter Trout.

To view a complete listing of the nominees, visit the Blues Foundation website at http://www.blues.org/bluesmusicawards/nominees.php4.
