At The Edge with Michael Brown
----------------------------------------------------
*Recently heard on At the Edge with Michael Brown was Gather Darkness by Arcane. Described as "a darker Tangerine Dream", the German based Arcane at last has their music available on CD. Gather Darkness evokes a mood of mystery and a state of anticipation, much like the Fritz Lieber novel of the same name. This release has the open feel of improvisation, with the pace of an accomplished storyteller. Pledged to use only technology from the 1970's, Arcane's music offers a glimpse into some personal loss and provides a sense of a revived era: cross-modulated synth bells fade to Mellotron choir, a minor-key melody gently introduces a 16 step sequence pattern, layers of rhythms and effects synchronize and fill out with the focus of a lead synth line. But Gather Darkness is less about vintage analogue gear than the emotion and atmosphere skilled musicians create using it. More information about this group can be found at Arcane.
Check out what At the Edge has to offer on WPNE 89.3 FM and

Terrence Simien and the Zydeco Experience boast a Grammy win (2008) and will soon be heard in the Disney Pixar production “The Princess and The Frog”. Tad Robinson’s performance on August 12 will highlight The Blue Side WI Public Radio night with CD and t-shirt giveaways. Check out the Essential List on The Blue Side website for a complete list of Algoma Summer Music Series artists.
*The 28th annual Blues In The Park is scheduled for Sunday, August 9, 2009, at St. James Park, S. Monroe St., Green Bay, from 2-5pm. Billy Flynn brings his Chicago blues guitar artistry back home to Green Bay for his annual gift to the city of Green Bay. This year’s event follows his return from a month-long tour of Europe with the Chicago Living History band that features Billy Branch, Lurrie Bell, John Primer, and Billy Boy Arnold. No vendors are at this event, those attending should plan a picnic lunch; lawn and bench seating with a playground for the kids. This event is famous for its low-key approach and volume--the perfect afternoon for people of all ages.
*The Grafton Blues Association is preparing for its annual blues blowout August 21 and 22, 2009. The event moved its scheduling up several weeks to take advantage of the Wisconsin summer weather that eluded the festival in its September slot. This year’s event features the return of Zac Harmon as the closer Saturday night. Diunna Greenleaf and Blue Mercy are slated for Saturday afternoon. Diunna Greenleaf is a vocal force with a charismatic stage presence and personal connection with her audience. She was the 2005 Blues Music Foundation’s International Blues Challenge winner, winner of the 2008 Blues Music Award for Best New Artist Debut, and a 2009 Blues Music for Best Female Artist. Expect Jonn Richardson on guitar, Diunna’s bandleader and long-time collaborator. Jonn has also travelled extensively with Otis Taylor and others. Visit the Grafton Blues Association on the web at Grafton Blues. Read more about Diunna Greenleaf and Blue Mercy at Diunna Greenleaf.
*Bryan Lee, Wisconsin’s own Braille Blues Daddy, returns to the area for an early performance Sunday, August 2, 2009, at The Waverly Inn, Two Rivers. Having immigrated to New Orleans many years ago, Bryan Lee honors the fans he developed long ago with regular forays back to the Midwest. Dave Sprang and his promotional compadres recently featured a great evening with Joe Moss and keeps the blues going with Bryan Lee. Come out and support Bryan Lee, a true ambassador of the blues. See more about Bryan Lee and The Blues Power Trio at Braille Blues Daddy.
*The Blue Side is undergoing some technical changes and updates that will bring the listeners an improved and more consistent program experience. WI Public Radio will be offering program hosts the option of program automation that allows digital storing of programs for future airing, retrieval of favorite audience segments, encore presentations, or fill-in shows. Your Blue Side host will never miss a week and we’re hoping that new listeners as well as time-honored listeners will appreciate the dependability that automation offers. Playlists will continue to be updated each week for viewing on The Blue Side website. Your comments, suggestions, and requests will be even more important! Write to Mary at blues@wpr.org.

*Save the Dates: September 5th-6th Fox Jazz Fest!
The Fox Jazz Festival is held every Labor Day Weekend in Menasha, Wisconsin’s Jefferson Park, on the beautiful shores of Lake Winnebago. This year’s festival, A Jazz Mosaic, brings another great weekend of free quality entertainment from local, regional and national jazz artists, as well as delicious food, specially brewed beer, and an amazing art corner featuring jazz related works from local visual artists. The Fox Jazz Festival is the perfect musical experience to cap off your summer, is free to all, and is great for family, friends, jazz lovers and rookies alike! Headlining this year’s festivities are Matrix and Grammy award winning Arturo O’ Farrill.
Matrix is often described as being "ahead of its time," and this is certainly true, but there are many who believe that Matrix's '70s music, not to mention its new works, sounds as fresh as ever in 2009. Matrix brings together a wide variety of musical tastes and experience, from bebop to the rich power of big bands, the jazz-rock, pop and funk of the '60s and '70s, and the fusions of such artists as the "electric" Miles Davis, Weather Report, Chick Corea and Pat Metheny. Add to this the experiments of European jazz, and the classical music that most of the members have studied it all goes into the unique mix that is Matrix's musical signature.
Pianist Arturo O’ Farrill has been a force in jazz and Afro- Caribbean music for many years. His work with the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra for Jazz at Lincoln Center won him a Grammy in 2006, and his work with various projects large and small have allowed him to tour extensively. O’Farrill has appeared on numerous records including the Grammy-nominated Heart of a Legend, Carambola, and the soundtrack to the critically acclaimed movie Calle 54. His eight albums as a leader including his latest Song For Chico are also a testament to his major player status.
More information about Fox Jazz Fest can be found at Fox Jazz Fest.
*Also, mark your calendar for the Plymouth Arts Center's Jazz Crawl extravaganza. This is the 6th Annual Cheese Capital Jazz Crawl for the Arts held August 14th and 15th. Live jazz music will flow from 10 venues downtown, all kicked off at the Arts Center at 4 p.m. with the Virtual Art Gallery of Sheboygan. There will be a silent auction, raffles, horse-drawn trolley rides, and tasty delights. This will be a jazz experience you won't forget! The cost is $10. Call 920-892-8409 for more information about this event.
