AT THE EDGE with Michael Brown

--------------------------------------------------------------

* Recently heard on “At the Edge” with Michael Brown was music by Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, a group founded in Boston, Massachusetts in 1980. As described in the Boston Globe, “This group is the world’s hardest-rocking chamber music quartet with a sound that is like a classical-punk-jazz-car-wreck." Birdsongs of the Mesozoic incorporates many different musical elements of the modern classical and rock world and is almost entirely instrumental. Their newest release 'Extreme Spirituals' is their thirteenth album together in celebration of their 25th year together. The members of this group include Erik Lindgren on piano, Ken Field on saxophone, Rick Scott on synthesizer, and Michael Biervlo on guitar. The members of the group have also gained attention by composing music for film and television, including work for the Children’s Television Workshop’s highly respected 'Sesame Street' series. For further information on Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, visit their website: www.birdsongsofthemesozoic.org.

THE BLUE SIDE with Mary Flynn

--------------------------------------------------------------

* The Blue Side e-mail address has been simplified to make it easier to contact the program. The new address is: blues@wpr.org. Suggestions, comments, questions, and requests are always welcome by program host, Mary Flynn. All messages will be responded to.

* Interviews have played an important part in production of recent Blue Side shows. Listeners recently heard Mary interview Charlie Musselwhite and Robert Stroger. Future interviews will include a conversation with the great Allen Toussaint. Posted on The Blue Side web site is a November 2007 interview with Steve Thomas, road manager of The Fabulous Thunderbirds. A companion interview with both Kim Wilson of The Fabulous Thunderbirds and guitarist Kirk Eli Fletcher has been posted as well.

* The Blue Side congratulates Bob and Sue Koester and Delmark records on 55 years of issuing the best jazz and blues recordings. A celebration was held at Buddy Guy's Legends on Friday, March 7, 2008. The label has produced seminal recordings of blues artists Jimmy Dawkins, Willie Kent, and Junior Wells; as well as jazz artists Malachi Thompson, Sun Ra, and Tab Smith, to name just a very few. Check out The Blue Side web site's Essential List at http://wpr.org/regions/gby/BlueSide.cfm for a link to Delmark's web site.

* Exciting news for blues lovers! Cadillac Records started to film in Chicago in March 2008; it's about the rise of Chess Records and the work of Leonard Chess. The film will also focus on artists Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Chuck Berry, and Etta James and their music. Actors will include Beyonce as Etta James, Jeffrey Wright as Muddy Waters, Cedric The Entertainer as Willie Dixon, and Adrien Brody as Leonard Chess. This film promises to deliver some great music. More in future newsletters as we learn more about this production.

* Make plans now to attend the Chicago Blues Fest--the world's largest free blues festival! Easy to get to, friendly people, great food, and the best in today's blues music. See The Blue Side web site at http://wpr.org/regions/gby/BlueSide.cfm for a link.

JAZZ ODYSSEY with Chris Kuborn

--------------------------------------------------------------

* NEW JAZZ PROGRAM BEGINS ON WISCONSIN PUBLIC RADIO Chris Kuborn Take Listeners on a “Jazz Odyssey.”

* On Wednesday February 13th, Wisconsin Public Radio listeners heard a new jazz program: Jazz Odyssey. Jazz Odyssey is the brain child of host Chris Kuborn, who has hosted 52nd Street Jazz since April 2007. Along with a name change, Kuborn will broaden the musical horizons of his Wednesday night jazz program.

* The show will feature more contemporary jazz, but Kuborn plans to continue paying tribute to the genre’s roots in traditional jazz as well. “Jazz has a history of reinventing itself,” say Kuborn, “and Odyssey will take listeners on a voyage through the current transitions and styles.” Each show will focus on one of the many styles and forms of jazz. “I want to introduce listeners to new styles and artists that they haven’t been previously exposed to,” describes Kuborn.

* Besides music, technology has also changed jazz scene. “Technology has created new distribution methods, allowing artists to gain exposure for their music without being signed to a record label,” explains Kuborn. Because of the new technology, Kuborn can stay at the forefront of the ever-evolving genre of jazz. “As Jazz listeners we need to seek out the new talent in Jazz, there’s a whole world out there of talented musicians! I hope to introduce you to some.”

* Chris’ Caribbean and Jazz band “Island Magic” performs on Wednesday nights at the Ground Round in Neenah. They would love to see you there!

Jazz Odyssey with Chris Kuborn can be heard every Wednesday night from 10 p.m. to midnight
