----------------------------------------------------
*Recently, Michael Brown, interviewed Croatian pianist, Dejan Lazic. In March, Dejan was a featured artist at the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra’s concert at the Weidner Center performing on Beethoven: Concerto for Piano no 4 in G major, Op. 58. More information about the interview will be available soon.
Dejan was born in Croatia and grew up studying at the Mozarteum. He had quickly established a reputation worldwide as “a brilliant pianist and a gifted musician full of ideas and that is able to project them persuasively”. The New York Times has hailed him for his use of poetry, phrasing, and vivid dynamic effects. He is a very spontaneous and impassioned performer and also a successful composer. More information about Dejan Lazic can be found at www.dejanlazic.com.

The Blue Side with Mary Flynn
----------------------------------------------------
*In this edition:
-The Blue Side visits the Byrd of Paradise
-Cadillac Records now on DVD
-Festival season warms up
-Buddy Guy show at Oneida Bingo and Casino
*The Blue Side host, Mary Flynn, made a trip out to the west coast in March and was invited to join Byrd Hale, host of the seminal blues show, The Byrd Of Paradise on Stanford University’s KZSU. Byrd Of Paradise is streamed on the internet each Saturday from 11a-2p Central Time and is a blues wonderland of rare recordings, contemporary releases, live interviews, and blues news along the west coast and around the country. Mary brought WI Public Radio out to the west coast and the show, sharing stories of Chicago blues, WI Public Radio, and the music scene in the Midwest.
*Cadillac Records was released on DVD March 10, 2009. Released in theatres December 5, 2008, this movie featured the Chicago blues scene in the “golden age” in that city’s musical history. Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Little Walter were featured throughout as well as significant story line regarding Chuck Berry and his impact on the national music scene. Beyonce turns in a nice performance as Etta James and does tribute to the classics that Ms. James made great. Wisconsin’s own Billy Flynn was the featured guitar sound of Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, and the Etta James songs on the soundtrack and movie recording. Flynn also contributed the break song heard at the top of the hour and end of The Blue Side each week.
*The festival season is developing for 2009. The Chicago Blues Fest has trimmed one day from its offering; a reasonable accommodation in this era of cutbacks. A three day event will preserve this greatest and largest of all free blues festivals in the world for at least another year. The venerable San Francisco Blues Festival announced that is retiring after 36 years. Tom Mazzolini has done an outstanding job presenting a unique, friendly, and talent-rich festival each year. The San Francisco Blues Festival may return in the future should funding be available. The Grafton Blues Fest moves to August this year. The line-up is expected to be announced soon and will be added to The Blue Side Essential List as soon as announced.
*Buddy Guy appeared at Oneida Bingo and Casino Three Clans Room on March 8, 2009. He presented a dynamic sounding show with a bit of blues history and reminding the audience of the true roots of blues music heard today. He gently admonished one audience member who yelled out as an example the name of a rock-tinged contemporary guitar player as the greatest in blues. Mr. Guy took the opportunity to give a lesson in blues education and history. Guy also did his classic guitar walk into the audience, giving those in attendance an up-close and personal look at the performer. He ended the show with the title cut from his latest CD “Skin Deep”.
*Word was received that Willie King (of Willie King and the Liberators) passed away of a heart attack in early March on his 66th birthday.

*Thank you to all who participated in our Blue Note Concert ticket giveaway. We had a great response and gave away over 20 tickets to devoted Jazz Odyssey listeners. The 70th Anniversary Blue Note Concert at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center was fantastic and Wisconsin Public Radio was fortunate enough to get the unique opportunity to be a part of it. I hope all who attended had as good of a time as WPR and Chris Kuborn did. We hope to be able to do more of these giveaways again in the near future. Thanks for the support!

Kalihwiyo'se with Chris Powless and Richie Plass
----------------------------------------------------
*Featured as keynote speaker this year at the Fox Cities Book Festival is author Sherman Alexie, Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Indian, with his book “Without Reservations: An Urban Indian’s Comic, Poetic & Highly Irreverent Look at the World”. Sherman Alexie will be speaking in the Appleton West High School Auditorium on Saturday, April 18th at 7:00 p.m. More information about his appearance at the Fox Cities Book Festival can be found at www.focol.org/bookfest/.
Alexie was born hydrocephalic, which means with water on the brain. He underwent surgery at the age of six months and was not expected to survive. He beat the odds but still had many health complications. He became fascinated with novels and poetry at the age of three. He decided that he may get a better education off of the reservation, so he attended a high school in which he was the only Indian, except for the school mascot. As a young teenager, he wrote his first novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian.
Countless publications and awards followed as well as a collaboration with musician Jim Boyd to record the album “Reservation Blues”, which contains songs from the book of the same name.
More information on Sherman Alexie can be found at his website www.shermanalexie.com.
