At The Edge with Michael Brown
----------------------------------------------------
*Featured last week on the show with Michael Brown was music by artist, Ben Neill. He is a composer, performer, producer, and inventor of the mutantrumpet, a hybrid electro-acoustic instrument. He has been called "the mad scientist of dancefloor jazz" (CMJ). "a creative composer and genius performer" (Time Out NY), and "a musical powerhouse, a serious and individual talent" (Time Out London). Neill's music blends electronica, jazz and ambient, blurring the lines between DJ culture and acoustic instrument performance.
Neill has recorded seven albums and has been featured on numerous compilations including Wired Magazine's "Music Futurists". He has performed his music extensively in a wide variety of international settings including the Cite de la Musique France, Berlin Love Parade Germany, Spoleto Festival Italy, Umbria Jazz Italy, NIME Conference 2005 Vancouver, Bang On A Can Festival New York, ICA London, Istanbul Jazz Festival Turkey and the Edinburgh Festival UK to name a few.
In 2002, Ben Neill "made music industry history" (MSNBC News) by releasing Automotive, an album entirely comprised of extended versions of music he originally wrote for Volkswagen TV and Internet commercials.
More information about Ben can be found at Ben Neill Myspace.

Jazz Odyssey with Chris Kuborn
----------------------------------------------------
*Chris Kuborn kept the spotlight on rising star Norwegian jazz group, The Helge Lien Trio this past week. They won a 2008 Norwegian Grammy for their recording “Hello Troll” and are compared to Brad Mehldau and The Esbjorn Svensson Trio. Their website describes that 2008 release perfectly as “an album that paints lyrical- impressionistic moodscapes, and whose appeal is practically irresistible.
The trio consists of Helge Lien (piano), Frode Berg (bass), and Knut Aalefjaer (drums). The Helge Lien Trio, who have already won a large circle of fans in Scandinavia and Japan with their five albums and inspiring live concerts, are especially significant. They maintain the balance between jazz traditions and the avantgardist art of improvisation like hardly any other classic piano trio, par excellence.
Also featured on the Jazz Odyssey show was another trio that pianist Helge Lien played with Tri O’Trang. A saxophone, tuba, and piano group that is a little bit more outside than his namesake trio.
More information on the Helge Lien Trio can be found at Helge Lien Trio.
Tune in to Jazz Odyssey each Wednesday on WPNE 89.3 FM and
WHND 89.7 FM from 10p-12mid. Check out The Jazz Odyssey website for the weekly
