*UW-Oshkosh “Wired” - A local concert performed and produced by the faculty of the UW-Oshkosh music department was the highlight of this month’s local electronic music scene. UW-Oshkosh faculty-produced and performed electronic music was the focus of UW-Oshkosh “Wired”, held November 11th in the Arts and Communication Center’s Music Hall of the UW-Oshkosh campus. The concert featured compositions by Ed Martin, assistant professor of music, and James Chaudoir, professor of music composition. Computer-generated music was accompanied by live music performed by UWO faculty members Charles Isaacson (trombone) and Jeri-Mae Astolfi (piano).
Dr. Martin is an award-winning composer of instrumental and electro-acoustic music, a theorist, and a music educator. His compositions have received first prize in the 2005 Electro-Acoustic Miniatures International Contest, the 2004 Craig and Janet Swan Composer Prize for orchestra music, the 2004 Tampa Bay Composers' Forum Prize for Excellence in Chamber Music Composition, and the 21st Century Piano Commission Competition at the University of Illinois. His works have been performed in Europe, South America, and throughout the United States at events such as the International Computer Music Conference, SEAMUS national conferences, SCI conferences, Florida Electro-acoustic Music Festivals, Electronic Music Midwest, North American Saxophone Alliance conferences, Confluences – Art and Technology at the Edge of the Millennium in Spain, the Soundings Festival in Scotland, Nuclea Musica Nueva de Montevideo in Uruguay, and the International Electro-acoustic Music Festival Santiago de Chile.
James Chaudoir is Professor of Music Composition at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Chaudoir's varied interests are reflected in the wide range of works he has written for vocal and instrumental ensembles--from solo performer to choir and orchestra--and many pieces incorporating dance. He has also worked in the electronic medium utilizing both analog and MIDI technique. Included in his honors are numerous ASCAP Standard Awards, Wisconsin Arts Board Fellowships, and commissions from Arts Midwest/Meet the Composer, the Texas Composers Commission Fund, the Wisconsin Choral Directors Association, the Robert Evett Fund of Washington, D.C., various grants from the Ohio Arts Council and the University of Wisconsin system, and artist residencies awarded through the Robert E. Gard Wisconsin Idea foundation, the Ragdale Foundation, and the Atlantic Center for the Arts.

*In this newsletter edition:
Cadillac Records meets WI Public Radio’s The Blue Side
University of Chicago Folk Fest
Keeping The Blues Alive Awards from The Blues Foundation
Blues Blast Awards at Buddy Guy’s Legends
*Cadillac Records is the highly anticipated music movie out on December 5, 2008. Featuring executive producer and stars Beyonce Knowles as Etta James, Academy Award winner Adrien Brody as Leonard Chess, Jeffrey Wright as Muddy Water, Mos Def as Chuck Berry, and Cedric The Entertainer as Willie Dixon, Cadillac Records will include additional music by Buddy Guy, Olu Dara, and Nas. Based on the post-war Chicago blues era in Chicago that heralded the rising careers of Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Little Walter, and Chuck Berry, this movie will hopefully draw attention to the rich tradition of Chicago blues and its most important players of the day. Chicago has been hit hard by the loss of many notable blues artists in recent years. However, festivals like the Chicago Blues Fest and clubs like Buddy Guy’s Legends, B.L.U.E.S., Blue Chicago’s two clubs on Clark, Rosa’s, Andy’s, Nick’s, and others remain active featuring Chicago’s most unique tourist asset--Chicago blues. The Blue Side of WI Public Radio has a musical link to the Cadillac Records production. Guitarist Billy Flynn, who makes his home in Wisconsin, has had music featured on the show. In 1992, after listening to blues on the UW-Green Bay campus-based programming of WGBW and WPNE for years, Flynn wrote a song inspired and named after The Blue Side; it’s heard during the hourly break of each show. Billy Flynn has contributed significantly to the world of blues during his career, touring and recording with artists Willie Kent, Jimmy Dawkins, Otis Rush, Kim Wilson, and numerous others. Flynn’s guitar work will be heard throughout Cadillac Records as the guitar sounds of both Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry. *With winter closing in, the days getter shorter and the nights longer, we can look forward to February and the University of Chicago Folk Festival. This festival is free during the day and offers a wide variety of music events including Cajun dance lessons and sessions, music workshops, performances, and impromptu jams that seem to spring up in myriad nooks in the gothic University of Chicago buildings. The evening performances have concert tickets available each night and include an eclectic and esoteric mix of music genres and artists. This event is a back in the day walk in time--a music lover’s haven. An event not to be missed! Visit the following link to learn more: http://www.uofcfolk.org.
*The Blues Foundation, based in Memphis, TN, announced their annual Keeping the Blues Alive (KBA) Awards this past week. These awards are in conjunction with the blues music awards announced in May 2009. The KBAs recognize non-performers--those people who work, often behind the scenes, to promote, support, encourage, guide, direct, or assist the blues industry to reach its audience. The KBA winners represent the wide variety of activities that support blues overall and recognize the formidable efforts of non-performers who love the blues and use their skills to further the blues mission. This year’s winners and more KBA information can be found at http://www.blues.org/kba/.
*The Illinois Blues touts “Your #1 Source for all news Blues”. On November 2, Illinois Blues hosted the Blues Blast Awards at Buddy Guy’s Legends; drawing a notable assortment of musicians such as Magic Slim, Lonnie Brooks, John Nemeth, Bob Corritore, Lurrie Bell, and more. See the pix, list of award winners, and sign up for their monthly newsletter at http://www.illinoisblues.com/emailsignup.htm.

Jazz Odyssey with Chris Kuborn

*Jazz Odyssey (Jazz ODC) Update – Many requests for more music from the Esbjorn Svensson Trio have been coming in after every show in which I play their music. This popular Swedish Trio was just beginning to gain national recognition when it was all cut short by the untimely death of leader and pianist Svennson. He was killed earlier this summer in a freak scuba diving incident. I continue to receive new releases and many bootleg recordings of their live shows even after his death. The trio was well known for mixing jazz, rock, ambient and remixes elements to their music and attracting large younger audiences to their concerts. A listen to their music will quickly take you through many styles of modern jazz and almost approaches dare I say “New Age” at some points. It is very melodic and trancelike but with a “Jam” quality that many modern jazz listeners are looking for coming from the rock genre.
Stay tuned this month for a feature broadcast of the trio on Jazz Odyssey. Two hours of some of the finest music recorded both live and in the studio by the trio. As always please feel free to contact me with requests, comments, concerns or ideas for future programs at jazzodc@wpr.org.
*One final note: we lost a great modern jazz channel this week when the satellite radio companies decided to finally merge their programming. Hit hard was the only Modern Jazz Channel in the country (maybe the world) – Beyond Jazz. While I rarely promote other radio formats, channels or stations, one like this, furthering the cause of Modern Jazz needs to be recognized and remembered. They will be broadcasting no longer – they were cancelled in the merger. Look to this newsletter or on my website at jazzODC.com for more info on the new ventures of Russ Davis and Michelle Samartino as they develop. I know they are thinking of starting an online radio station – That would be great!!
*Coming soon on the website: forums, calendar and Jazz ODC merchandise –stay tuned. Have a great Turkey Day – and be thankful for life, our planet and all of us on it. We all make up this world and with Jazz we all have One Distinct Connection (ODC)!
Tune in to Jazz Odyssey each Wednesday on WPNE 89.3 FM and
