At The Edge with Michael Brown
----------------------------------------------------

* Recently heard on At the Edge with Michael Brown was Patrick Grant. His music combines synthesizers and world music instruments with those in the classical Western tradition. He uses a post-minimal style that is often used for the visual forms and structures found in chaos theory and the natural sciences but can also contain hard edged elements of rock and other popular music of the zeitgeist. His mastery of alternative tunings allows a listener to experience the richness and sonic possibilities of music when liberated from western tempered tuning. Patrick Grant’s music has been described in this way:

“If all you know is 12 pitches, the experience of listening to Grant's music is like going from seeing in black and white to seeing colors. Grant's music has a driving and rather harsh energy redolent of rock, as well as a cleanly western sense of melodicism. The music's momentum and intricate cross-rhythms rarely let up, making the occasional infectious tunes that emerge all the more beautiful for surprise.”

More information on Patrick Grant can be found at http://www.strangemusic.com.

Check out what At the Edge has to offer on WPNE 89.3 FM and WHND 89.7 FM from 10p-12mid every Monday. At the show’s website you will find weekly playlists and additional information http://wpr.org/regions/gby/edge.cfm.

*The summer and fall blues scene has settled down for 2008 and what a great year it was! The Grafton Blues Fest had wonderful weather for September in Wisconsin. This state festival moves to August next year to take advantage of the warmer weather that lingers into the evening. This will make this young and growing festival even better. Be sure to include a trip through Grafton to visit the site of the 1920's recording studio that made Grafton a notable destination for blues musicians as well as the interesting downtown plaza devoted to blues.

*As mentioned in the last newsletter, Koko Taylor's band was involved in a serious car accident in western Wisconsin at that end of August. Most passengers in the van were seriously hurt and continue to face long recoveries. If you would like to help these artists, please visit the following link for information on you can contribute to their support and encouragement in making future music: http://www.kokotaylor.com/news.html and http://todayschicagoblues.blogspot.com/2008/09/koko-taylors-band-how-to-help.html

*Cadillac Records, the movie inspired by the seminal blues label Chess Records, is beginning its publicity promotion in advance of the expected Christmas Day 2008 release to theatres. This movie is being watched closely by the blues industry in the hopes that it will energize the blues scene, provide exposure to the music and its artists, and secure its place as a treasured American art form. The soundtrack is currently being offered on Amazon Records for pre-order. Executive producer Beyonce has already appeared on VH-1's Fashion Rocks singing the movie's expected breakout song, At Last. This movie and soundtrack has an exciting WI Public Radio connection. The Blue Side will have more information in the next newsletter.

*Remember that The Blue Side welcomes your suggestions, comments, and requests. Contact the show by e-mailing blues@wpr.org. It's always great to hear from the audience and your thoughts on what you hear are an important part of making The Blue Side a program that you look forward to hearing each week. The Blue Side's philosophy has been to present a balance of new music and classic or traditional blues with an emphasis on those lesser known or hard to find recordings. What's been your favorite artist or song? What do you want to hear more of? Every message will get a response from Mary.

Each Tuesday, you can hear great blues on The Blue Side on WPNE 89.3 FM and WHND 89.7 FM from 10p-12mid. Check out The Blue Side website for the playlist of what you hear each week (updated by the end of each show--no waiting!) and visit The Blue Side Essential List for updates on sources to find music, articles, and music at http://www.wpr.org/regions/gby/BlueSide.cfm.

*Bittersweet Winds is a traveling exhibit on Native American Imagery. Beginning at 4 pm Sunday, October 26th and running until Friday, October 31, 2008, “Bittersweet Winds” will be on display at the Harmony Cafe [1660 West Mason Street] in Green Bay. Richie Plass, Director of Education of Changing Winds Seminars, Inc. and Kalihwiyo’se host, will be on-site during the week of the exhibit.

Assembled in 2006, “Bittersweet Winds” came into existence from a request by Randy Gunter, who owns and operates a graphic arts business in Verona, WI. Gunter has made a state-wide offer to any school in Wisconsin for all the graphic work needed if they make the change of their name and logo if it depicts a Native American name or image. As Gunter was doing his research, he came upon Plass. He explained to Plass, “If I could display a small exhibit right here in our lobby showing all aspects of Native American images, I believe this would help school administrators, teachers and the public in general the true process of the use and disrespect in this process.” Thus, the exhibit became a reality.

The exhibit began with two small boxes that carried various documents photos and some craft items. The exhibit now has over 200 items and continues to grow. Plass has had the exhibit in six different states, various college campuses and different communities. Plass says, “I call it the good, the bad and the ugly of how our image has been used since the Europeans landed on the eastern shores of the United States.” He also states how people can now see first-hand, and learn how and why many Native Americans feel no respect when these practices are followed. Our main goal for the exhibit is education. The exhibit is also able to be used as a training tool in diversity, stereotyping and racism.

All are invited to come and view the exhibit. Plass will be holding two teacher sessions during the week's exhibition. They will be Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, October 28th and 29th beginning at 5 pm and ending at 7 pm. These sessions are open to all teachers from any grade and school and are intended to assist teachers in various aspects of classroom activities and the Native culture in Wisconsin.

For further information, you can e-mail Richie Plass at: richieplass@yahoo.com. You are also invited to view their web site at: http://www.changingwinds.org “Bittersweet Winds”.

In store for you each Thursday is Kalihwiyo’se heard on WPNE 89.3 FM and WHND 89.7 FM from 10p-12mid. Check out their website for weekly playlists and events in the northeastern Wisconsin region at http://wpr.org/regions/gby/Kalihwiyo'se.cfm
