At The Edge with Michael Brown
----------------------------------------------------
*It all started with a jam session. Recently heard on At the Edge with Michael Brown was the group National Debt with their album Third Eye Opener. The roots to the band National Debt can be traced back to the summer of 1989. While attending California Polytechnic State University, musician Salvador España began hosting the KCPR radio program Audioscapes. During one of the shows, Sal invited several musician friends for an impromptu, on-air jam. Pleasantly surprised, the group decided to make the sessions a quarterly activity. Each session, the ensemble grew in size, with as many as 16 musicians performing (limited by the size of the mixing board). Members of the local electronic band Equinoxe joined James Ellis and other musician friends of Salvador; both groups brought other musician friends. At one point, someone mentioned that "This band is growing faster than the National Debt." Now armed with a name, the musicians followed only one rule: No 12 Bar Blues.
By 1995, the only two fixed members were Salvador España (keyboards, synthesizers, effects) and James Ellis (guitar, bass, drums, synthesizers, effects). While other musicians still joined in, the compositional aspect of the band remained with these two.
One of their recording trips resulted in the band's second CD Third Eye Opener. The four extended tracks are much more in the ambient/experimental realm. ‘Dusk and Crop Circles’ is almost industrial, while ‘House of Rumour’ adds rhythmic elements. The 22 minute ‘Riddles in the Dark’ displays many of the band's styles.
More information about National Debt can be found at National Debt.

-The economy and blues festivals
-Calendar reminders
*Have you checked out The Blue Side’s Essential List lately? We’ve added an Essential Streams list so you can log on to more blues throughout the week. Exciting news this month is the addition of the Ground Zero Blues Club live webcast direct from Clarksdale, MS. Check out the link and visit the site--webcasts will be available for live performances inside the club several days per week. This is a great chance to hear local performers in the Clarksdale area. This Essential List will be building slowly, so please visit regularly to see new additions and updates.
*Each week it seems we hear of the demise of another blues festival as a result of the current economy. This past September, the venerable and revered San Francisco Blues Festival folded after 35 years and sent shock waves through the blues community. The South Florida Blues Festival announced this week that they’ve cancelled their event due to lack of sponsorship. Now more than ever, it’s important for blues fans everywhere to support live music when events are booked and to buy music from the artists, stores, websites, and downloads. Supporting and attending artist performances and buying the music will ensure a future and development of this genre for years to come. Let’s hope the economic slide stops soon before all the festivals are gone forever!

Jazz Odyssey with Chris Kuborn
----------------------------------------------------
*Join Chris Kuborn on Friday, October 23rd at 8:30 p.m. at Cranky Pat’s Pizzeria in Neenah to experience the talents of the jazz group, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey (JFJO) consists of pianist Brian Haas, drummer Josh Raymer, upright bassist Matt Hayes, and guitarist Chris Combs. To say that JFJO's music transcends boundaries and expands minds is an understatement. Since 1994, JFJO has brought their impressionistic and improvisational vision to many of the world's finest music festivals and clubs. Music listeners are blown away by JFJO's instrumental creativity, musical risk, and near telepathy on stage. In the past 18 months, JFJO has traveled to Europe four times and have played at major jazz festivals all over the world.
JFJO's music generates an all-encompassing sensory experience for the listener. Since 1994 JFJO's virtuosic instrumental interplay has won over fans and critics alike all over North America, Europe, and South America. Their latest album, One Day in Brooklyn, was released in September of this year which marks the debut of the new quartet lineup in the studio setting. The EP is the first release on JFJO's new record label Kinnara Records. With the addition of Combs on lap steel and Hayes on acoustic bass, JFJO has perhaps invented its own genre: red dirt jazz, equal parts earthy and nimble, pastoral and sweeping, elegant and rollicking. The quartet taps into their birthright, drawing upon "The Tulsa Sound" born of hometown heroes like JJ Cale and Leon Russell. These roots grow up into a jazz foundation that's built firmly upon the likes of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk.
Over the years, the band has blossomed into one of the most visionary, fearless and tight bands around. JFJO's music offers a different sound that exhibits a rare form of abstract yet mature musical freedom and inquiry.
This is a musical experience not to be missed! Visit their website for more information at Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey.
Tune in to Jazz Odyssey each Wednesday on WPNE 89.3 FM and
WHND 89.7 FM from 10p-12mid. Check out The Jazz Odyssey website for the weekly
playlist at Jazz Odyssey.

Kalihwiyo'se with Chris Powless and Richie Plass
----------------------------------------------------
*Kalihwiyo’se host, Richie Plass will be exhibiting “Bittersweet Winds” at the 40th Annual National Indian Education Conference in Milwaukee at the Hilton Hotel this weekend October 22nd-25th. The Bittersweet Winds exhibit is destined to become a museum on the history, for better and for worse, of the image of Native Peoples in America. This exhibit contains many images that reflect the propaganda that permeated this country in order to maintain various negative attitudes towards Native Americans. However, the exhibit is balanced with accurate portrayals both historical and present day. How does Chief Wahoo really honor the images of the proud people of the past? How does the team name Redskins honor the people today? How was your image of Native Peoples influenced by the propaganda? And how can one tell the difference? Come and see for yourself. To learn more about Richie’s Bittersweet Exhibit, visit the website at Bittersweet Winds.
The National Indian Education Association (NIEA) was incorporated in 1970 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Today, it is an organization committed to American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians. NIEA has connected people and organizations that have the same drive and passion to help the Native children excel academically while being grounded in their unique languages and cultures. NIEA has become the strategic policy maker for Indian education. Also, NIEA continues to develop key partnerships with other Native organizations. The NIEA fights hard for their members and helps provide the ideas and tools to help Native students succeed and support Native languages and cultures. NIEA members are educators, advocates, students, and organizations.
