At The Edge with Michael Brown
----------------------------------------------------

*Recently heard on At the Edge with Michael Brown was Bill Frisell’s Disfarmer album. Bill Frisell has a knack for insinuating an odd haze around the most wholesome aspects of Americana. Disfarmer, named after the cranky Arkansas photographer who created gripping images of his neighbors, finds Frisell teamed with steel guitarist Greg Leisz, violinist Jenny Scheinman and bassist Viktor Krauss for a set of 26 evocative miniatures.

In the small mountain town of Heber Springs, the Arkansas artist known as Disfarmer captured the lives and emotions of the people of rural America between 1939-1945. Critics have hailed Disfarmer's remarkable black and white portraits as "a work of artistic genius" and "a classical episode in the history of American photography.” Disfarmer's work has captivated the imagination of the celebrated guitarist and composer Bill Frisell, who has been inspired to write and perform music in concert with multiple projected images from this treasure of period portraits.

"Frisell's pacing is magnificent, and the album sweeps along with purpose like a gorgeous, spacious epic. It is full of sounds that suggest settings and characters, including the mysterious eccentric who inspired the recording."

More information about Disfarmer: The eccentric photographer known as Disfarmer (1884-1959) seemed to be a man determined to shroud himself in mystery. Born Mike Meyers, the sixth of seven children in a German immigrant family, Disfarmer rejected the Arkansas farming world and the family in which he was raised. He even claimed at one point in his life that a tornado had lifted him up from places unknown and deposited him into the Meyers family. In time Mike expressed his discontent with his family and farming by changing his name to Disfarmer. In modern German "meier" means dairy farmer, and since he thought of himself as neither a "Meyer" nor a "farmer," Mike Meyer became "dis"- farmer. Disfarmer's reclusive personality and his belief in his own unique superiority as a photographer and as a human being made him somewhat of an oddity to others. Having your picture taken at Disfarmer's studio became one of the main attractions of a trip into town.

More information about Disfarmer can be found at Disfarmer and more information about Bill Frisell can be found at Bill Frisell.

Jazz Odyssey with Chris Kuborn
----------------------------------------------------

*September has been a great month for jazz in the northeast Wisconsin area. Earlier this month, the Fox Jazz Fest in Menasha featured an incredible headlining act, Matrix.

In the mid to late 70’s, Matrix, a 9 piece fusion band from Wisconsin headed out on the road to deliver some of the most innovative fusion on the market. They played Monterey, Newport and a host of other major jazz festivals and venues. They shared the stage with Joe Pass, Dizzy Gillespie, Pat Metheny and a lot more big names of jazz. Last summer as Chris Kuborn listened to their music with a couple members of the band, he couldn’t believe how timeless the music was. When he heard they were reuniting for 2 concerts in northeast Wisconsin he had to be a part of the event and to document the reunion of these 9 (10 with Tom Washatka on sax) musicians.

Chris devoted an entire show with music from Matrix’s 3 recordings. During the show you also heard the band talk a little bit about themselves, music and the road. Look for more information on Chris’s website www.jazzodc.com about a documentary that he is putting together about the band. This will be released later this year.

More information about Matrix can be found at Matrix.

Tune in to Jazz Odyssey each Wednesday on WPNE 89.3 FM and WHND 89.7 FM from 10p-12mid. Check out The Jazz Odyssey website for the weekly playlist at Jazz Odyssey.

Jazz Odyssey with Chris Kuborn can be heard every
Wednesday night from 10 p.m. to midnight

Kalihwiyo'se with Chris Powless and Richie Plass
----------------------------------------------------

*Richie and Chris got their very first intern this year. Leah Strobbants is a student at UWGB and has truly become an asset to their program. Leah helps with phone calls and requests. She has been extremely helpful with this on Thursday evenings and has reduced their time by taking care of their phone calls during the show so that they are able to concentrate on playing the songs their loyal listeners want to hear.

Leah also has set them up on Facebook. Add Kalihwiyo'se Wpne as your friend today and get all the latest updates on events, programs, music, and guests. Facebook has opened up so many possibilities and it has created a great response to their weekly show. They are talking about putting some videos of their guests and doing more interviews with various local artists. Leah has been a great addition to the Kaliweyo’se program on Thursday nights. Welcome and thank you to Leah!

In store for you each Thursday is Kalihwiyo’se heard on WPNE 89.3 FM and WHND 89.7 FM from 10p-12mid. Check out their website for weekly playlists and events in the northeastern Wisconsin region at Kalihwiyo'se.

Kalihwiyo'se with Chris Powless and Richie Plass can be heard every
