HISTORY
Every Monday night Wisconsin Public Radio listeners have the opportunity to sit back and soak in AT THE EDGE with Michael Brown. It’s difficult to categorize the program as it offers a diverse spectrum of music that falls somewhere between experimental and alternative.
Instead of playing a piece and explaining the various aspects, Michael blends the selections in a purposeful and significant manner. Each performance flows into the next; taking off in a new direction, or unwinding into a vaguely familiar yet undiscovered aural experience.
At times Michael will invite guests to come to the studios to co-host or even perform on-the-air. Every week is bound to be unusual and interesting. Michael shared, “The music I play has to fit two criteria: First it shouldn't be well known and second, it has to stretch the boundaries."
The retired schoolteacher, husband and father of four, developed an interest in broadcasting while in college. He discovered a “place for people to hear new music” and continues to instill this ideal into his weekly program.
Brown began volunteering at WGBW, the student operated radio station at UW-Green Bay, in the early 1970s. By hosting “Conversations In Jazz,” late into the night as well as a daily morning music, arts, and news program he eventually became one of the student leaders at the station and has become a fixture in the non-commercial radio scene in Green Bay. After a short stint in commercial radio he discovered the freedom of public broadcasting and has been continuously on-air since 1974.
