Sen. Tammy Baldwin Says She Supports Plan To Reduce Troops In Afghanistan

U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) says she supports President Barack Obama’s plan to draw down the number of American troops in Afganistan.

At a commencement speech for the West Point Military Academy, Obama said 9,800 soldiers will be in Afghanistan by the end of the year.

She says she has concerns about the ability of Al Qaeda to re-establish a foothold in Afghanistan, which she says is a large country without a centralized government.

“That is my major concern – those who have the werewithal to plan and execute very destabilizing terrorist attacks against U.S. interests at home and abroad,” said Baldwin.

Baldwin supported the war after the Sept. 11 attacks when she was in the House of Representatives. Even though she supported the war, Baldwin says she thinks it should have been brought to a close “some time ago.”
