This Thursday, August 14th, Wisconsin Public Radio’s Route 51 features a discussion on war and turmoil in the Middle East with two central Wisconsin residents who have worked in the region, and have firsthand experience of its cultures and conflicts. Terry E. Arnold of Stevens Point is a retired Senior Foreign Service Officer of the U.S. State Department who served as a diplomat in Egypt and Syria, and as Chairman of the Department of International Studies of the National War College and Deputy Director of the State Department Office of Counterterrorism and Emergency Management. He is the author and co-author of six books on politically motivated violence, including Fighting Back – Winning the War on Terrorism, A World Less Safe, and Let’s Talk About Palestine. John Viste of Wausau served as Country Director of American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA) in Beirut, Lebanon, and has decades of experience working in the Palestinian territories and Egypt with CARE International, Associates of Rural Development, Save the Children UK, and JumpStart International. He is currently the Program Manager of the Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service. We’ll talk to Arnold and Viste on the underlying causes of the Israeli Palestinian conflict, and the emergence of the group, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Iraq.
