La Crosse’s Brewing Heritage; Growing Hops in Wisconsin

Featured in this Show

  • La Crosse's Brewing Heritage

La Crosse’s beer making history dates back to 1854, when Nicolai Brewery and the John Gund Brewing Company first opened. Since then, there have been more than 15 breweries established in the city, some more long lasting and culturally significant than others. We discuss some of that history, and talk about modern day brewing with the brewmasters of the City Brewery and Pearl Street Brewery.

  • Growing Hops in Wisconsin

Wisconsin grew 75% of the nation’s hops in the 1860’s, but disease and insects wiped out the hops industry by 1920. Hops are primarily used in the brewing of beer and help add flavor. With the expansion of the craft beer industry, more farmers in Wisconsin have been exploring hops as a crop in recent years.
