  • Frustrated At Work? Leap Into A New Career

Changing careers can be a scary proposition, especially after investing years in one industry. Many factors can drive a person to want to change careers and explore greener pastures — from a toxic work environment to an overwhelming amount of stress.

While daunting, the leap into a new career isn’t impossible, according to life coach Michelle Ward. Ward said taking the leap to a new career path is even easier in today’s age of the Internet.

“What’s exciting about living right now, in 2014, is that it doesn’t take much capital to really make a change,” said Ward, who sees many clients hoping to leave their careers to become entrepreneurs. “You no longer need to get a bank loan to start a business or open up your own company. It’s really about zoning in on what’s going to make you comfortable and confident in terms of making that leap and then doing something every day to keep doing it.”

Ward said the first step in changing paths is to suspend disbelief.

“Tell yourself, ‘You know what? For the next week … I’m not going to let myself say, ‘But this won’t work,’ ‘But this isn’t realistic,’ ‘But I’m being stupid,’’” Ward said. “I think we’re so used to putting up the argument with what we want to actually do.”.

A better question to ask might be, “How might this actually work?” Ward said one key to making it work is identifying someone currently in the job the person covets and engage them in an informational interview. Ward advises that most people are willing to talk about what they do.

“Nine times out of 10, people are helpful and they get excited about sharing their knowledge,” Ward said.
