On March 1 at 10 a.m. Wisconsin Public Radio’s Route 51 focuses on a new plan by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to limit the amount of phosphorous in the Wisconsin River watershed. The ambitious plan is seen as a way to reduce toxic blue-green algae in the river’s flowages by controlling phosphorous in farm field runoff and waste water treatment plant discharges. Host Glen Moberg will moderate a discussion with Kevin Kirsch, water resource engineer for the DNR; Ken Schroeder, UW Extension agriculture agent for Portage County; and Rick Georgeson, president of the environmental group Petenwell and Castle Rock Stewards (PACRS). Georgeson, a Lake Petenwell homeowner, lobbied for the 2009 Wisconsin River watershed study that led to the new DNR phosphorous plan.
