The cost of a thanksgiving meal for 10 people will be less expensive than it was last year according to the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation, despite impacts to the turkey industry brought on by an outbreak of avian flu in 2015.

Each year the bureau estimates what it costs to cook a thanksgiving meal for a family of 10. Spokesman Casey Langan said that even though an outbreak of bird flu decimated the nation’s turkey and chicken flocks, this year’s survey suggests shoppers will catch a small break.

“And (the estimate) found it coming in at just over $50 this year, which turns out is 1.5 percent less than last year’s survey, surprisingly,” Langan said.

He said that’s because retailers are selling whole turkeys for less than cost in order to get shoppers in the doors. Dairy prices are down compared to a year ago, Langan said, but baked goods are slightly higher due to instability in the egg market.
