Voter Advocates Mount Photo ID Effort As 2016 Election Days Approach

The League of Women Voters says it’s getting ready to help potential voters with new photo ID requirements for this year’s elections.

The organization’s Milwaukee County chapter is holding a workshop Saturday on how to engage what it calls the “emerging electorate.” Chapter volunteer Michelle Goldstein defines the term as unmarried women, people of color, the low-income people and those under 30.

She said one hurdle this year, is making sure members of those groups have a valid form of photo identification to register and vote.

“There are some barriers and I don’t argue that it is a challenge, but certainly one that can be overcome,” Goldstein said.

She stressed that photo ID help and voter registration efforts have to move quickly. There are primary elections on Feb. 16, with other local, statewide or national contests in April, August and November.
