Gov. Scott Walker has joined U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan in denouncing presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump’s comments about the federal judge overseeing a case against Trump University.

Earlier this month, Trump said Judge Gonzalo Curiel couldn’t be unbiased in his ruling in the case, which is alleging Trump University defrauded its students. Trump said Curiel would be biased against him because of Trump’s previous public statements about building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

Curiel is a Mexican-American who was born in the U.S.

“I believe what he said about the judge is wrong,” Walker said on Wednesday. “Not as a Republican, not as a political person, but I think it’s just wrong as an American.”

Walker said Trump should retract his comments — and soon.

“He needs to make it abundantly clear to the American people that he does not embrace those ideas, and I think it’s particularly important between now and the convention that he does that,” he said.

Ryan went further earlier this week, calling the comments “textbook” racism.

Trump said his comments have been “misconstrued” by the media, but that he does feel he’s been treated unfairly in the case.
