Wcast is a new benefit for Wisconsin Public Radio members.

Now you can listen to many of WPR's programs when and where you want with Wcast - WPR's new program download service.

 How does Wcast work?

When you become a WPR member, one of the member benefits you will receive is the ability to download many WPR-produced programs to your PC or MP3 player. Now you can listen to your favorite shows while shopping, jogging, driving in your car, while you're on vacation - anywhere you want and anytime you want!

If you're not a WPR member or if your membership has expired, you can become a current member by:

  • Contributing online at http://wpr.org/membership/
  • Calling our Membership Services staff at 800-383-9772
  • Mailing your contribution to: Wisconsin Public Radio, PO Box 14197, Madison, WI 53708

You'll be able to log into our Wcast system and begin downloading programs just a few minutes after making an online contribution. If you contribute by telephone, it may take a few hours to update your membership. You can log in using your email address and zip code. If you don't wish to share your email address, you can use your WPR member number and zipcode once it is assigned.

Why are some programs not available for downloading?

There are several reasons why a program might not be available.

  • The program is more than one year old.
  • The program is not produced by Wisconsin Public Radio.
  • The program contains significant amounts of copyrighted music or other material.
I just called and made a pledge. How soon will I be able to download programs?

Thanks for your pledge! Downloading WPR programs is a benefit of membership so you need to be a current member or have a paid pledge to log into Wcast. There may be some processing delays depending on how you make your contribution. You should be able to download programs if:

  • You've become a new member or renewed your WPR membership in the past year.
  • You've just phoned in during a pledge drive to make a contribution using a credit card - allow 2 hours.
  • You've just called our membership department to make a contribution using a credit card - let them know you require immediate Wcast access - allow 2 hours.
  • You've received a pledge packet and returned it with your payment by mail - please allow 4-5 days.
  • You've just contributed online with a credit card - allow just 10 minutes for processing.
I've only got a 56k dialup connection. Can I still download WPR programs?

Yes, but an hour WPR program will take nearly an hour to download using a dialup connection! Instead, You may want to simply listen to our online streaming archives which "plays" a program through RealPlayer. If you still want to download the program, you can be doing other things on your PC while the file is downloading in the background. Here's a table that may help.

ESTIMATED DOWNLOAD TIME

DSL Line250 kbps10 Minutes
Cable Modem500 kbps5 Minutes

Can I see what other WPR members are downloading?

Yes, See our Wcast Top-Ten List. Statistics are aggregated over several days.

What format does WPR use for their downloadable program files?

We used the MP3 format which is playable on almost every computer and portable player made. Most programs are encoded at 64kbps - an acceptable quality for monaural "talk" programming. A few programs like "Michael Feldman's Whad'Ya Know?" are encoded in stereo at 96kbps. If you're concerned that our format may not be compatible with your media player, download the short, three minute test file below and launch it in your player.

Once I download a program, can I burn it to a CD so I can listen to it on my CD player?

Yes. Most CD burning software (Nero, Roxio, iTunes, etc) can create a "music CD" directly from an MP3 file. We suggest you save the file on your hard drive before attempting to burn the CD.

Is there a limit to the number of programs I can download?

Yes, but it's very liberal. We are limiting members to 20 download requests per day because of bandwidth and processer limitations. If you request a program and it fails during the download process, you can simply click the Download button again to restart it, however every time you request a download button, it counts against the 20 downloads/day limitation.

When I play your MP3 files on my iPod®, sometimes it will hang or Reboot. Why?

An early version of the iPod had this issue. This issue can be resolved by downloading the latest iPod / iTunes firmware update from Apple. Plug your iPod into your computer and launch iTunes. If a software update is available, it will usually alert you. Otherwise, update your iTunes/iPod software at http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/.

When I try to download a particular MP3 file, I get an error message saying this file is not available. Why?

The MP3 file may have been corrupted during its encoding or transfer to our server. We automatically receive alerts from our server when someone asks for a file that isn't available. We will correct the problem as soon as possible and email you a notice when it is available.

Do WPR's MP3 files have any copyright restrictions I should be aware of?

You can download to your PC or MP3 player and burn the programs to CDs. You cannot edit or reorganize the content of the program in any way. We understand that some CD software will however change or "normalize" the recorded audio levels during the burning process, and this is acceptable. WPR downloaded programs are for WPR Members, Staff and Underwriters only. They cannot be sold or posted on other web sites without permission. All WPR programming is © Copyright University of Wisconsin-Extension.

I download several programs a day, so I was pleased to see the new checkbox option on the login page that states "Check to Remember Your Login". However, when I check it and log in, I received the message "Sorry, but your login information could not be saved". Why?

This login feature was installed in December 2007. If you check this option while logging into Wcast, the next time you download a program, your login information will already be filled in - just click the GO button. This login information is saved in a small piece of text called a "cookie" which is saved on your PC. However if you have turned off the ability of your browser to save "cookies", you will not be able to use this feature. Also, you must be using the same computer for our system to find your login information, but you can save your login information on more than one computer. Finally, "clearing" your computer's temporary files may also erase your stored login information.
