Installing Real Player

We know you'll enjoy Wisconsin Public Radio's live webcasts of the Ideas Network and the NPR News & Classical Music Service!

In order to hear our webcasts or audio archives, you'll need to download and then install the RealOne Player program from the RealNetworks website. Note that there is a free basic player available.

Below are step-by-step instructions that will assist you. You may want to print out this page. Note it is meant for Windows users, but may assist users with other operating systems.

REAL ONE PLAYER (Version 10) DOWNLOAD & INSTALLATION INFORMATION
FOR WINDOWS USERS

1. Make sure before installing the RealOne Player that your hardware meets the following minimum requirements:

  • Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6 or later, Windows 2000 (NT 5.0) with Service Pack 2 or later, or Windows XP (Home or Pro)
  • A minimum 350MHz Intel Pentium II processor
  • 64MB of RAM or 128MB if XP (right-click on My Computer and select Properties)
  • 52MB of free disk space.
  • 28.8Kbps modem or other direct internet access (LAN, Cable Modem, DSL, etc)
  • A 16-bit sound card and speakers
  • High Color (16 bit) video display card set to display at 800x600 (right-click on desktop, select Properties then the Settings tab)
  • Internet Explorer 5.0 or later
  • No firewall that may "block" access to ports used by RealPlayer.

2. Go to our special Public Radio Free RealOne Player Download Page.

3. When the download page is displayed, it will ask which Operating System you have (Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Unix). Once you've selected your Operating System, it will begin downloading the latest version of the RealOne Player.

    A note about Download Time: The RealOne installer program is approximately 12 Megabytes. It will "download" into your computer's hard drive at a rate which depends on your Internet connection speed. For example; if you have a 56Kbps Modem, The Windows version of the RealOne Player will take 15-20 minutes to download. If you have a broadband internet connection (DSL, Cable), it will take only a few minutes.

4. Once the download is completed, the installation will begin.

  • A. License Agreement: If you wish to continue with the installation, click ACCEPT.
  • B. Installation Location: The default file location is shown. You may change it if you wish.
  • C. Desktop Settings: By default, the program will add a program shortcut on your desktop, another on your Quick Launch bar, and install a desktop shortcut to other free services. If you don't want one of these, uncheck them. Click NEXT.
  • D. Previous Version: If you have an older version of RealPlayer Plus on your PC, the installation program will ask if you want to continue with the basic player installation. If so, click YES
  • E. Default Player: You'll be asked if the RealOne Player can be your default media player for other media file formats such as MP3, WAV and CDs. Check or uncheck the media types, then click FINISH.
  • F. Startup: The program will now start. You may see some ads or special offers. If you don't want any of them, click CONTINUE.
  • G. Finish: The RealOne Media Browser will open to their Real Guide website. Peruse the site if you wish, then close the player.
  • H. If you've never registered your RealPlayer software before, the first time you use RealOne Player, you'll be asked to register your RealOne player supplying your email address, a password for your "account", your country, language and zipcode. If you have previously registered, enter your password to continue use.

5.Now that you've got the player downloaded and installed, go to our webcasting page and click on one of the network webcast links. Within 10-20 seconds, you should hear our live web service! Also, check out our extensive program archives. We archive a year of most WPR-Produced programs.
