The White House has added Milwaukee to a list of communities with active efforts to train people for high-tech jobs.

The Obama administration’s TechHire program recognizes cities working with hundreds of employers to help teach computer science and information technology skills. That includes adult education programs separate from university or technical college settings.

“We want to take them to the next place of wherever they want to go in their life,” said Herb Hayden, director of the Adult Learning Center in Milwaukee, which will be starting a tech training program soon. “So after earning their GED, what better way to earn a certificate in Microsoft or coding or something of that nature?”

The White House program doesn’t come with new money. But Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said the designation as one of about three dozen TechHire communities should give the city a leg up on applying for federal training funds.
