Wisconsin’s Division of Motor Vehicles offices will begin issuing new drivers licenses and identification cards this fall, which officials with the state Department of Transportation said will be the most secure in the nation.
The most noticeable change on the new cards will be the switch from color to black and white photos. Ann Perry, the director of the DMV Bureau of Driver Services, said that the new images aren’t what they appear to be on first glance.
“The consumer will see a black and white photo, but it’s actually laser engraved,” she said.

She said the cards are designed to be tamper-proof.
“The new card is made of a polycarbonate material. That is several layers melted together. It’s virtually impossible to separate those layers without destroying the card,” she said.
The updated cards will be made available across the state by the end of October.
Perry said people should wait until their current driver’s license or ID card has expired before getting the new one.
The procedure for getting the cards at the DMV remains the same.
