SEGMENT #1
#1 Pulaski, WI Husband’s Loud Sneeze
Z recommends just learning to live with it. Sneeze vibrations are habits, they can be changed, but often aren’t.
#2 Buffalo, NY Hemp Seeds
Caller wants to know about nutritional value and digestibility of hemp seeds. Z explains that seeds and nuts are great because they have good fats, protein, fiber, minerals and antioxidants, but the idea that one special seed/nut is a “superfood” is likely a matter of marketing. Z recommends a couple of handfuls a couple of times a day – about 200 calories – are good for staving off hunger.
Topic Peanut Butter vs. Almond Butter
Z and T discuss whether peanut butter or almond butter is healthier. Both have the same calories, but Z says almond butter is healthier because it has monounsaturated fats, which may be better for your heart and reduce cholesterol. It may also reduce blood pressure (though this could be due to lower salt content than peanut butter). Z recommends a variety of nuts in your diet.
#3 Eau Claire, WI Smoking Hurts Biking?
Z says that 25 years of smoking cannot be totally erased, because some of the long has gone through attrition. Z says your lungs immediately start getting better the day you stop smoking, though, and he definitely advocates keeping up with aerobic exercise in order to boost lung capacity and obviously not to smoke.
E-mail Too Many Eggs?
T reads an e mail from Elena in Milwaukee, WI who is concerned about her brother’s egg consumption. Z says 12-18 eggs/wk is definitely too many, and that her brother should try other sources of protein to fuel his running. Z says egg whites have protein but no cholesterol.
SEGMENT #2
#4 Port Washington, WI Ghee vs. Butter
Z says that ghee, or clarified butter, is not healthier than butter. Ghee has some of the milk proteins removed, but they have the same amount of fat/oil.
E-mail Hand Foot Mouth Disease and Nail Loss
T reads an e mail from Julie who is concerned about her son’s hand foot mouth disease and potential nail loss. Z says there shouldn’t be any long-lasting effects, but nails do take a long time to grow out – 3 months.
SEGMENT #3
TOPIC: Pot Smoking Lowers IQ
Z and T discuss a study that found that teenagers who smoke pot have a lower IQ than those who do not. Z says this is significant because it proves that our brains do develop past the age of five, and that risky behavior as teenagers can be dangerous to future health.
#5 LaFayette, IN Back Pain
Z clarifies that B12 in ANY form is the same vitamin. Shots are not better or "purer" than pills. B12 is manufactured by animals only. Z says the shots are onlyusefulin cases of Crohn's Disesase where you are unable to absorb the pills from the pills.
Mythbuster: Music Reduces Pain
T asks Z whether music can reduce pain. Z affirms that yes, it can, because it distracts you. A study in the Journal of Pain showed that when people were electrically shocked, they experienced less pain when listening to music than when not.
#6 Windyville, MO Trouble Sleeping
Z checks with the caller to make sure that she’s not drinking stimulants like caffeine at night, that she’s exercising, and to rule out menopause hot flashes. Z advises that she get a sleep apnea screening because she may need a CPAP machine. Z then recommends 300 mg of Gabapentin at bedtime for 2-4 weeks to regulate sleep patterns or 50 mg of the anti-depressant Trazodone before bed for one month.
E-mail Motion Sickness Tricks
T reads an e-mail from psychology professor, Ellen in Buffalo, NY who advises that for car sickness, one should avoid looking out the side window. She also says that pretending to steer can help carsick passengers overcome the cause of motion sickness – which originates from a discrepancy between what we perceive and what we are doing.
