#1 Logan, UT                   Diziness Dilemma
Z informs the caller that her blood pressure is not equalizing as quickly, and that's producing the feeling of dizziness. Z says that certain drugs (beta blockers in particular) can slow the equalizing response as can age. Z recommends exercise to build up cardiovascular flow and balance.

#2 Bloomington, IN         Skateboarding Knee Injury
Z recommends quad sets exercise which relieves pressure on the knee by building up the quad muscles. Z also recommends 2 Aleve, twice a day for a month. Quad exercises will be on resources page.

Topic                                 Black Licorice Lethal?
Z and T discuss a release from the FDA that looked at how consuming frequent amounts of black licorice may leech potassium from the body and be dangerous (even deadly) to folks with heart troubles. Black (not red) licorice - contains a compound that can drop potassium levels leading to abnormal heart rhythms, high blood pressure and even congestive heart failure. Z cites a personal case in which a patient of his continually tested low in K levels and stumped Z.

Z says that behavioral troubles are often hard to pin down. He recommends counseling for the parents and their son.

T reads an e-mail from a listener named Dan who offers up his solution for dealing with Tennis Elbow: Bowling. He claims it helped loosen his stiffness and he bowls with each arm! Z loves it.

#4 Jacksonville, FL    Blushing Ears
Z believes this is an adrenaline response. He recommends trying a beta blocker (which can help with migraines, controls the thyroid, helps with stage fright, etc). Atenolol and INderal are two beta blockers that Z suggests.

T reads an e-mail from Amy who is curious to know if cocoa leaves will help alleviate altitude sickness. Z says he's read thatit can be effective, but knows (and recommends) Diamox can be effective. He says Aspirin is more for the headaches not the altitude sickness.

TOPIC:                         Larger Gap between Pap Smears
Z and T discuss how the gap between pap smears for women can now be longer. New guidelines say that many women can wait as long as 5 years between screenings.

#5 Wichita Falls, TX    Should Men take HPV vaccine?
Z says yes! He explains that the FDA is currently calling for that recommendation right now and that the response has been ironic - given the controversy surrounding young women receiving the vaccine. There's been a muted response to boys being given the vaccine, which Z says speaks to a double standard in preventative care.

Mythbuster:                  Toxic Garlic
T reads a listener myth from a listener named Bill who is feeling dizzy from garlic that he thought would be a good home remedy for a cold, but read is toxic. Z says that garlic is NOT toxic and is often associated with home remedies although the validity to those claims varies.

#6 Racine, WI              Hair Loss
Z says the main reason for the hair loss is hereditary. He adds that weight loss, stress, and disease can be other contributing factors. He suggests Rogaine for Women. Z says there's no natural product that can prevent this from happening.

T reads an e-mail from Lizz in Clinton, TN who takes T to task for making the comment that he was the only person in the world that can move his top joint without moving the rest of his finger. Lizz explains that one of her former teachers was able to literally flip people off with his double-jointed fingers.
