Wisconsin tribal leader Ada Deer has a long history fighting for social justice, and she eventually became the first woman to lead the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs. She joins us to talk about her experiences as a community leader and to discuss the importance of Native American Heritage Month. We also look at the importance of having a diverse university faculty, and get the latest on the biggest headlines from around the state this week. We also talk to an on-the-scene reporter about the latest news about attacks and deadly shootings in Paris Friday night.

Ada Deer On Native American Heritage Month And Turning 80
November is Native American Heritage Month and this fall also marks the 80th birthday of one of Wisconsin’s most well known Native American advocates. Ada Deer is a member of the Menominee Tribe from Kenosha. She was the first member of the Menominee Nation to graduate from UW-Madison and the first Native American to earn a master’s in social work from Columbia University. She became the first woman to chair the Menominee Nation in Wisconsin and then went on to head the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs under President Bill Clinton as the first woman in that position as well. At 80 she is still closely involved in Native American advocacy and activism.
