The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced that Wisconsin will get $33 million in grants for hunting and fishing projects this year.
The grant money comes from federal taxes that sportsmen and women pay for things like guns, ammunition, fishing and archery equipment. Wisconsin’s share is part of more than $1 billion in grants to Midwest states.
According to Aaron Buchholz, the state Department of Natural Resources deputy division administrator, the money has been used to study bobcat populations and angler habits and to improve shooting ranges across the state.

“It’s a very important component of how we do business in the state and meeting the objectives of resource management that are associated with those funding sources,” he said.
DNR officials haven’t yet decided which projects will get the federal funds this year. The agency has until September of next year to assign where the money goes
