How Racism Lead To Attack On Black Charleston Church
Dylann Roof has confessed to authorities that he is responsible for shooting and killing nine members of a prayer meeting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston on Wednesday night. According to investigators, he told them that he intended to start a race war.
It became apparent Thursday that racism was a motivation behind the attack when a witness reported Roof saying “I have to do it. You rape our women and you’re taking over our country and you have to go.” A Facebook picture also showed him wearing flags from apartheid-era South Africa and Rhodesia.
Some have been hesitant to characterize the attack as racist. Presidential hopeful Jeb Bush told a crowd this morning “I don’t know what was on the mind or the heart of the man who committed these atrocious crimes.” But other commentators have been clearer with some calling for South Carolina to take down the confederate flag that flies at its capital.
