Curly Lambeau Honored At His Alma Mater

Curly Lambeau is being honored with a plaque at his alma mater, East High. The plaque is meant to inspire current students to achieve.

The name of the Packers’ founder is forever associated with the team and the its home field. Allstate insurance company is presenting schools around the country with “Hometown Hall of Famers” plaques to commemorate graduates’ achievements on the gridiron.

In Green Bay, Curly Lambeau’s grandson John Lambeau unveiled the plaque at East: “Earl Louis, ‘Curly’ Lambeau founded the Green Bay Packers in 1919.”

Today East High is Green Bay’s most diverse high school. John Lambeau hopes the plaque reminds kids of their potential.

“I hope it motivates and shows that people from East High School and kids from East High School can do anything they want if they put their mind to it. I know he just wanted to play football. He just wanted to play. He got his buddies together, some local Irishmen in town. It was a way for the folks in the old days to have a brawl, but make it all legal and organized.”

Another early Packer, Arnie Herber, is being recognized with a plaque across town at West High. The two schools have a football rivalry dating back more than one hundred years.
