Officials at University of Wisconsin-Platteville say repairs to buildings damaged in last week’s tornadoes could cost more than $10 million.
Much of the damage was in the form of toppled trees. In addition, the football stadium was hit, three dorms were damaged, and the school’s Engineering Hall needs repair.
Chancellor Dennis Shields said the residence halls were relatively new.

“Roofs will have to be replaced, I think on all those facilities,” said Shields. “The repairs are underway. Because so many windows were shattered and the integrity of the roofs were damaged we have a lot of water damage inside those buildings.”
Shields is hopeful that damaged residence halls will be repaired in time for students in August, and they won’t have to make alternative arrangements.
“Right now we are hopeful that we plan for the worst-case scenario and hope for the best case,” said Shields. “We have every reason to think we won’t have to do anything dramatic at this point.”
There were about 200 summer students in the residence halls when the tornado struck June 16, but no one was seriously injured. As for the damaged football stadium, officials say that should be ready in September.
