Luck School District Receives School Safety Grant

20 School Districts Receive More Than $1.3M For Safety Upgrades

By

The Wisconsin Department of Justice announced Wednesday that 20 schools received more than $1.3 million in grants to improve safety. The Luck School District was awarded $39,516 for security improvements.

The grant will fund three major security improvements at the district. Luck School District Superintendent Cory Hinkel said they’ll be able to nearly double the district’s security cameras to 128, reducing blind spots. He said they’ll also buy high frequency walkie talkies and install a Raptor management system to conduct visitor background checks.

“The management system will allow us better monitor who’s coming and going into our school on a daily basis. It’ll keep records for us — (electronic) records — that we can look back and see who’s coming in,” he said. “It will also let us flag different people if there has been issues in the past so we can better monitor them when they are coming in as well.”

Hinkel said they will also train staff about mental health issues and how to see warning signs. He said there is always room to improve security.

“(We’re) keeping our staff up to date with current trends in education and in safety and making sure everyone is educated to best react if a dangerous situation would occur,” he said.

Hinkel said they are going to start working on security improvements immediately. The updates to the security system should be in place by Sept.1.

The district serves around 460 students.
