The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents hasn’t forgotten about possible changes to tenure policy: At its meeting Thursday, regents checked in on the progress of a tenure task force created earlier this summer.
The regents had created the task force after adopting a temporary policy to protect tenure. That policy was in response to a budget provision removing statutory tenure protections, approved by the Joint Finance Committee in May.
While the committee won’t meet until next month, Regent Jose F. Vasquez said the discussion on tenure should be seen as an opportunity.

“My encouragement to the task force and to the chairman is that it be looked as an opportunity to improve, but not necessarily because there is a problem that has got to be fixed. Because I don’t believe there is a problem,” said Vasquez.
The task force is scheduled to meet in August, with updates expected by the September regents’ meeting.
