School Safety Grants To Target Student Mental Health

Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel says $45 million in grant money available to schools in the state will go toward efforts to improve student mental health, the creation of local school safety intervention teams and additional physical security upgrades.

Schimel announced plans for the money Tuesday. The Legislature approved $100 million in grants for school safety in the wake of the Parkland, Florida, shooting but districts only applied for about $56 million.

Nearly all of the state’s public schools are expected to get some money while 40 percent of private schools applied.

Schimel created a second round of funding to give out the remaining $45 million, which he says will be awarded starting in October. He says it will advance baseline mental health and physical security improvements made in the first round.
