The state Department of Natural Resources Board has given snowmobilers a boost in Blue Mound State Park over the concerns of the park’s advocacy group. Skiers, hikers and bikers have also critisized the move.

The DNR has amended the master plan for the popular park 25 miles west of Madison to include a snowmobile trail connection that cuts through the Blue Mound property.

Dave Newman, of the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs, said riders will have little impact on other users.

“Wisconsin state parks are there for all of us to enjoy, not just those who feel it should be used for their favorite activities,” Newman said. “Not everyone is able to physically participate in skiing and biking.”

But a leader of the Friends of Blue Mound State Park group said the area is part of mini-mountain range that deserves special protection.

DNR officials said they will look at limiting snowmobiles to 35 mph.
