A new state recreational trail has been given the green light. It’s the Great Sauk Trail that will run from Sauk City to Devil’s Lake State Park.
Sauk County is partnering with the state to develop the land. County Board Chairman Marty Krueger told the Natural Resources Board last week about being on part of the property last summer.
“We’re sitting down on this prairie and I just couldn’t help but think, this is going to be fabulous,” Krueger recalled. “The plan as it states is to eventually hook up with the two million plus visitors per year in Devil’s Lake.”

The board unanimously approved the state trail designation. Part of the trail will go through the newly-created Sauk Prairie State Recreation Area. Sauk County is leading the fundraising for the nearly $2 million needed for the effort. More than 40 recreational trails are part of the state trail system.
