Mussel populations around the state are suffering as a result of extreme temperatures and drought. Lisie Kitchel works for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. She warns that if water levels continue to recede, the diversity of mussel species could be greatly diminished. Kitchel says mussels represent an important part of aquatic ecosystems and should be preserved.
In order to protect the mollusks, Kitchel stresses there must be ongoing efforts to improve water quality and prevent any further damage to natural habitats. Despite immediate concerns for mussel health she says she is encouraged by the number of citizens who want to rescue the shelled creatures. Kitchel says this is a clear indication that people are paying attention to the rivers and lakes which surround them.
