A solar panel program in Milwaukee has expanded as more homeowners show interest in sustainable energy alternatives.

Solar buy group Milwaukee Shine has hit a record number of solar installations after adding two more neighborhoods to its group buy initiative. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said the great success of the program is a win-win for the city.

“In 2013, during the whole year we had 30 businesses and homes commit,” said Barrett. “What’s even more impressive is that we’ve beaten that record during the first half of this year. But here’s the part that the taxpayers will like: We’re not using any additional city funds or tax dollars to do this.”
