A Reception Celebrating the Cuban Migrant Community of La Crosse

October 19 @ 6:00 pm8:00 pm

Free

Join us for the launch of Uprooted: the Interactive Online Exhibit, which explores the history of the Mariel Exodus in Wisconsin, when Cuban refugees were detained at Fort McCoy in 1980.

This event is a reception honoring our La Crosse community members from Cuba who have lived here since the Mariel Exodus of 1980. All are welcome to attend. There will be light refreshments provided by the chefs at Mexcal, Cuban music, and storytelling.

This event will be in Main Hall outside of the Library’s hours. Please enter using the doors on the 9th St. side of the building (east facing).

This event is the culmination of a collaboration between Dr. Omar Granados (UWL Global Cultures & Languages), the La Crosse Public Library Archives & Local History Department, Wisconsin Public Radio, and the Fort McCoy Public Affairs Office. This project was funded in part by a grant from Wisconsin Humanities, with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the State of Wisconsin. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this project do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Wisconsin Humanities strengthens our democracy through educational and cultural programs that build connections and understanding among people of all backgrounds and beliefs throughout the state.
