The Department of Natural Resources says the first widespread risk of wildfires exists now through Thursday, with Smokey Bear fire danger signs now posted at high or very high in many western and south-central counties.
The National Weather Service says temperatures in the 60s statewide, a low humidity of 20 to 25 percent, and strong winds dramatically increase the fire risk. The DNR has suspended burning permits in counties with high risk until rain is expected to roll through the state on Friday.
So far this spring, there have been 61 wildfires burning 227 acres.
