Jennie-O Recalling 91K Pounds Of Ground Turkey Due To Possible Salmonella Outbreak

USDA, CDC Investigating 164 Cases Of Salmonella-Related Sickness In 35 States

The Jennie-O Turkey store in Barron is recalling 91,388 pounds of ground turkey products the U.S. Department of Agriculture says may be associated with an outbreak of salmonella.

Jennie-O 93 percent lean and 85 percent lean ground turkey along with taco seasoned and Italian seasoned ground turkey are included in the recall. The products in question have expiration dates of Oct. 1 and Oct. 2.

A press release from the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said while the expiration date has already passed, some customers may still have the potentially contaminated products.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” the statement read.

Consumers are also being asked to look for a USDA inspection mark of “P-190” on the package.

The Jennie-O recall is part of a larger investigation by the USDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention into a cluster of illnesses involving 164 patients in 35 states who have reported getting sick after eating different types and brands of turkey products. Six of the cases have been reported in Wisconsin.

According to the USDA, the most common symptoms of salmonella-related sickness are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated foods.
