Demonstrators gathered in Red Arrow Park in Milwaukee on Monday evening to protest District Attorney John Chisholm’s decision to not press criminal charges against the former Milwaukee police officer who killed Dontre Hamilton in April.

While the protests occurred, a federal prosecutor announced that the U.S. Department of Justice would review the shooting to see if civil rights violation occurred.

Speaking on Wisconsin Public Radio’s “Central Time” on Monday, Hamilton’s brother Nathaniel said he and his family are calling for a change in the way police shootings are handled.

“We have to create the change,” said Hamilton. “We have to create the standards throughout this nation to make sure that we as a people, we have rights that should be protected by these officers. And when these officers violate these rights and they kill us, they are (held) to a higher standard than what District Attorney Chisholm is holding them to.”

Manney was fired in October for not following proper procedures for dealing with someone with mental illness when he confronted Dontre Hamilton in the downtown park.
