Dontre Hamilton’s Mother To Speak At Democratic Convention

The mother of a Milwaukee man killed by police during a confrontation will speak at the Democratic National Convention later this month.

After her son Dontre was shot in 2014, Maria Hamilton helped create Mothers of the Movement, a group of mothers who have had children killed in officer involved shootings or as crime victims. Hamilton said she is excited for her voice to be heard at the convention.

“I’m a part of history. The work that we as mothers of the stolen lives — as we perceive them — we have a voice, and the nation will have the opportunity to hear our voice and our stories,” she said.

At least six other Mothers of the Movement members will speak along with Hamilton at the convention in Philadelphia.

Hamilton is critical of police brutality and supports tighter gun laws, and she expects backlash from those opposed to her views, she said.

She supports presumed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s stand on reducing gun violence and reforming police department policies.
