African-American leaders in Madison are encouraging parents to talk to their children about civil disobedience as the community waits to hear if charges will be filed in the police-involved shooting death of Tony Robinson.

“There’s a great deal of anticipation and anxiety throughout Madison,” said Greg Jones, president of the Dane County NAACP. He and other leaders released a public service announcement this week asking parents to talk to their children about the pending decision.

They also asked for parents’ help in encouraging “peaceful” and “respectful” protests while letting children know about the long-term effects of arrests and citations.

“We encourage that communication, that discussion, for information sharing and for both parents and students to have that opportunity to talk about purpose—purpose of disobedience and purpose of social change,” Jones said.

Dane County’s District Attorney has said he will give two days notice before announcing whether he will press charges against the police officer.
