Madison Mayor Calls For Look Forward Following DA’s Decision In Robinson Case

Soglin Says Discussion Of Race And Inequality Must Go Beyond Law Enforcement

Madison’s mayor said the decision not to charge a white police officer in the death of a black man closes one chapter in a case that’s gained national attention. But he said it’s not the last word on issues of race and inequality that were brought up following Tony Robinson’s death.

Mayor Paul Soglin praised Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne while acknowledging how controversial his decision was. Soglin also praised city police, saying they have handled demonstrations with professionalism. But he warned protesters that those who break the law face arrest.

“The city of Madison will continue to provide the greatest latitude in allowing for political expression but impeding ambulances and fire trucks, will not be tolerated”

Soglin also said the community’s frustration over inequities has to have a wider focus than just law enforcement. He talked about the need for better jobs and health care.
