Seven Reported Dead in Oak Creek Shooting

By

Police say seven people are dead, including a gunman, in a shooting at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek shortly after 10 this morning. Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards says another three people are injured and at area hospitals, including a police officer who was shot while tending to a victim outside the temple. Another officer engaged the gunman, killing him.

Edwards says the temple is still considered a crime scene. He says the FBI is handling the criminal investigation, and is considering the matter a case of “domestic terrorism.”

Edwards says it took hours for police to search and clear the large facility, partly because of reports that more than one shooter might have been involved. He says it does not appear that there was another gunman, and no one is in custody.

Police plan to update the media again at 10 Monday morning.

The three injured victims were taken to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, where Dr. Lee Biblo says all are in critical condition, including the Oak Creek Police Officer who was shot. Two of the victims have already been in surgery, and the third was in surgery late this afternoon. Another update from the hospital is planned for 8:30 tonight.

Governor Walker has released a statement saying, “Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, as we all struggle to comprehend the evil that begets this terrible violence.

At the same time, we are filled with gratitude for our first responders, who show bravery and selflessness as they put aside their own safety to protect our neighbors and friends.”

He has canceled plans for an appearance in Green Bay Monday morning.
