Lake Superior Sees Big Increase In Water Levels

The Army Corp of Engineers (ACE) says Lake Superior’s water level went up nine inches last month, twice as much as usual for May.

It’s the second largest rise for one month since 1918. The ACE say a cold spring, a snowstorm and big snowmelt puts Lake Superior’s level just seven inches below its long-term average. Lakes Huron and Michigan also saw levels rise sharply. Both lakes rose five inches in May, compared to the usual three inches in that month.

Huron and Michigan remain 20 inches below normal, but are coming back from near-historic lows last winter.
