Lawmakers Unanimously Approve Mandatory Sexual Harassment Training

The state Assembly voted unanimously on Tuesday to require lawmakers to complete sexual harassment training at the beginning of each legislative session.

Under the new policy, lawmakers and their staff will have to complete the training.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, said he thinks the training will help prevent harassment at the Capitol.

“Every single person who works in government, or actually in any workplace, should feel safe whenever they walk into their place of employment,” Vos said. “So we’re doing our part in Wisconsin to make sure we have the training for employees who work inside the Legislature.”

The training doesn’t include any major changes to how the Legislature handles sexual harassment complaints.

The Legislature will continue its policy of refusing to publicly release information about sexual harassment complaints, which various news outlets have attempted to obtain.
