8. Orchestra Baobab ‘Ndéleng Ndéleng’ Tk 8 (5:40)

From inauspicious beginnings as the weekend house band at a Dakar club for government officials, Senegal’s Orchestra Baobob, named for the club (which in turn took its name from the native baobob tree),. The group went on to become one of the seminal bands of world music, with an influence that extended far beyond their national boundaries, throughout West Africa and into Europe and now in the U.S. Baobab performs N-Déleng N-Déleng – a traditional griot song about a man who can’t sleep for thoughts of his lady love. 11. Khun Narin ‘Sut Sanaen #2’ Alb Tk 3 4.36

Thailand’s Khun Narin, a modest collective of musicians from a small village, has an intriguing percussive and electric sound. Khun Narin, no longer an obscure band, introduces to an adaptation of the traditional song Sut Sa-na-en #2.

12. Oumar Konaté ‘Addoh’ Alb Tk 1 5.21

Here is Ou-mar Ko-nate front door in Gao, Mali with his first band. That was the mid-80’s, today, he’s one of Mali’s emerging artist, again performing at the MWMF this fall. Konate sings Ah-do, a sad tale about a young girl who cries as she’s taken to her new husband’s house, forced to marry someone she doesn’t love.

13. Alpha Blondy ‘I Wish You Were Here’ #857 Tk 4 4.29

Alpha Blondy, from the (Coat Dee-Vwah) is a reggae singer and a major star in West Africa. He has played with The Wailers. He studied English at Hunter College in New York, and later in the Columbia University American Language Program. Alpha Blondy sings mainly in the trade language of (Dyula) Dioula, but also French, English, and sometimes in Arabic or Hebrew. His lyrics convey strong political attitudes and a sense of humor and themes of love evidenced on I Wish You Were Here.

14. Paul Robeson ‘Ol’ Man River’ Cmpl Tk 2 3.08

Bass Paul Robeson was more than a singer’s singer. He in fact excelled as an athlete, actor, and activist, qualifying him as a contemporary renaissance man. His early accomplishments as a professional football player, Columbia law school graduate, and an actor on Broadway in the 1920s seemed but a prologue to even greater achievements that followed. Leonard Slatkin/St. Louis Symp Orch ‘Subway Jam’ Alb Tk 7 3.10

American composer, composition instructor, writer, and later in his career a conductor of his own and other American works. Copland was instrumental in forging a uniquely American style of composition. In his later years he was hailed as “the Dean of American Composers”. Leonard Slatkin conducts the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra employing Copland’s 1964 Music For A Great City, and the movement titled Subway Jam. 21. Zingaros ‘Tutti Frutti’ Alb Tk 4 3.08

With the selection Tutti Frutti, Zingaros the band was formed in winter 2004, when the guitar and violin duo got together by chance after jamming. Later, the duo added an accordion player. 22. Afro-Celt Sound Sys ‘Colossus’ Tk 2 6.48

The Afro Celt Sound System is a musical group that fuses modern electronic dance rhythms with traditional Irish and West African music. Afro-Celt pays homage to a river that flows in Northern Ireland called Colossus.

26. Women of Mambazo ‘Vimba’ Cmpl Tk 12 1.30

The South African vocal group Women of Mambazo was formed by Nellie Shabalala, then married to Joseph Shabala, founder of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Though her life ended tragically, her legacy lives from a posthumously released tribute album in 2003 recorded by a group of women from her home church which includes the tune Vimba, a tribute to Nellie recalled as a great spirit in African music.

Concha Buika is a Spanish singer. Her album Niña de Fuego was nominated for the 2008 Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The selection No Ha-bra Na-dee-ay’ en el Mundo, Nobody In The World Like You, appears on the album.

29. Kimmo Pohjonen, Samuli Kosminen; Kronos Quartet ‘Plasma’ Sglns #75 Tk 10 (6:16)

Kim-mo Poh-jo-nen is a Finnish accordionist who has revolutionized accordion sounds and performance with his custom-made electrified and modified instrument. Since the mid-nineties he has released numerous albums and toured the world with various projects. Kim-mo Poh-jo-nen, Sa-muli Kos-mi-nen Kluster, a sampling master engineer and programmer meet the Kronos Quartet from San Francisco. They call the work Plasma. Two of the most important figures in all of jazz meet at the same musical intersection. Charlie Byrd, American guitarist, best known for his association with Brazilian music, particularly bossa nova and Stan Getz, American jazz saxophonist known as “The Sound” because of his warm, lyrical, wispy, and mellow timbre emblematic of his idol, Lester Young. Sou-ad Massi is an Algerian singer, songwriter and guitarist who began her career performing in the Kabyle political rock band Atakor. Massi’s music prominently features the acoustic guitar with Western musical style influences like rock, country, Portuguese fado, sometimes with Asian musical instruments. Massi sings in Algerian Arabic, French, English and Kabyle (Berber language), often employing multiple languages in the same song.
