Led by recorder players Nina Stern and Daphna Mor – East Of The River explores the melodies from the traditional repertoires of the Balkans, Armenia and the Middle East, with works from the Medieval European classical repertoire. Johnny Clegg & Savuka ‘Orphans Of The Empire’ Alb Tk 1 (5:20) A long time crusader for human rights and reform in South Africa, the British-born singer/songwriter and Zulu dancer Johnny Clegg has recorded a large corpus of work that, among other things, has brought international acclaim to South African pop music. With his band Savuka, a multiracial group, Clegg’s music revolves around injustice, the struggle of the South African people to unite as one, and the hope for a better world. “Orphans of the Empire,” the opening track, reimagines the story of slavery and imperialism. Baaba Maal ‘Fanta’ Sngls #102 Tk 14 (4:23) Baaba Maal, a Senegalese singer and guitarist born in Podor, on the Senegal River. Unlike many prominent Senegalese musicians, Baaba Maal wasn’t born into the griot caste, a group who are expected to become praise singers and oral historians. Maal was instead expected to do the same as his father and work as a fisherman, but he followed his heart and has become a worldwide music star. These days he travels the globe, singing, speaking and raising awareness for sociopolitical causes close to his heart. Maal sings Fanta. Records, 1993 (2007) 14. Paul Robeson ‘It Ain’t Necessarily So’ Alb Tk 25 (2:35) Paul Robeson excelled as an athlete, actor, singer, and activist, qualifying him as a contemporary renaissance man. His early accomplishments as a professional football player, Columbia law school graduate, and an actor on Broadway in the 1920s seemed but a prologue to even greater achievements to come. Here Robeson takes on the role of George Gershwin’s Opera Porgy and Bess in the role of Sportin’ Life, normally performed by a tenor. Scaled to fit his Bass-baritone range, Paul Robeson takes a light hearted and not so reverent poke at selected religious narratives from the Bible with “It Ain’t Necessarily so” from the George Gerswin’s Opera Porgy and Bess. Chinbat Baasankhuu ‘The Trot of the Horse with the Black Velvet Coat’ Alb Tk 1 (4:40) The Mongolian Yatga is a zither with ties to the Japanese koto, with similar links Chinese Vietnamese and Korean stringed instruments that would eventually provide a platform for the invention of the western guitar. The yatga in two forms has either 13 or 21-strings. The artist you’ll hear is Chinbat Baasankhuu, hailing from a village in the Altai province of Mongolia with ties to surrounding mountain ranges. She is a professor of the yatga in the Department of Traditional Music at the National University of Culture and Art. This is extraordinary instrument, handsomely negotiated by Chinbat Baasankhuu. Oumou Sangaré ‘ Djama Kaissoumou’ Alb Tk 1 (6:46) Grammy Award-winning Wassoulou musician, is Oumou Sangare. As a gifted child singer, Oumou Sangaré sang in order to help feed her struggling family. The selection Djama Kaissoumou (Let’s Talk) reflects on a number of issues important to Sangaré – Women’s rights is Africa, young people, the need for drinking water and, encouragement even in the face of death. She’koyokh Klezmer Ens ‘Esmera Min’ Cmpl B Tk 7 (3:20) She’Ko-yok-hh’ Klezmer Ensemble is considered by some to be Britain’s best klezmer and Balkan music band- described as “sophisticated, multi-lingual and talented. She’Koyokh is a Yiddish expression meaning “nice one!”. The band formed in 2001, playing klezmer, the instrumental Jewish wedding music of Eastern European communities only to became fascinated by Gypsy and folk music with explorations in to the musical worlds of Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece. Sergio Mendes/Stevie Wonder ‘Berimbau/Consolacao’ Alb Tk 3 (4:22) Sérgio Mendes is a Brazilian musician with over 55 releases, and a keen appetite for bossa nova heavily crossed with jazz and funk. Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars ‘Rich But Poor’ Alb Tk 5 (4:34) Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars is a band from Sierra Leone which was formed by a group of refugees displaced to Guinea during the Sierra Leone Civil War. Today, they are a world class band, rumored to have disbanded only to return with a new album ripe with several reggae textured tunes. Creole Choir Of Cuba ‘Dulce Embelezo’ Sngls #102 Tk 15 (1:46) The Creole Choir of Cuba is a Cuban musical group signed to Peter Gabriel‘s record 2their Haitian descendants enslaved to the Caribbean from West Africa. The Creole Choir’s ten remarkable singers come from Camagüey, Cuba’s third city, down towards the eastern end of the island. Songs are sung in creole, Cuba’s second language, first created by slaves by fusing words together words from their African languages. English is widely spoken about the island as well. Ensemble Accentus ‘Si Verias (If You Would See)’ Alb Tk 6 (7:01) The Accentus Ensemble was founded in Vienna in 1988 and internationally renowned early music group specializing in the music of the Sephardic romances passed on by an oral tradition, as well as the court and sacred music of the early sixteenth century. Performing orally preserved secular Jewish works, the Accentus Ensemble are especially adept at the improvisational elements consistent with the performance practice of the early music of medieval Spain where the Arab musical traditions of Northern Africa-Morocco – Moorish songs thrived, and the modes of Turkey, Greece contributed to melodies created for love, weddings and street music and dance. From there comes, Mory Kanté, guitarist, singer, balafon player and heir to the griot tradition of the ancient Mande kingdom. Kanté, is acclaimed for his preservation and modernization of the musical forms of his homeland. Kante pay homage to a language in his homeland. Pape Fall “African Salsa” (Senegal) Tk 11 (5:38) Senegalese singer and band leader Pape Fall is one of the most popular salsa performer in Africa today…his career in Afro-Latin music goes back to 1966 when he started performing with his band Dakar Rhythme…the song is a tribute to salsa created in Africa, yet influenced elswhere…Paps sings in spanish about a poor cart driver carrying a load of sugar cane to sell for meager earnings…the later part of the song is Senegalese Wolof language.
