Nick Tomaro, Milwaukee’s public health emergency response planning coordinator, said during a Wednesday press conference that certain public spaces will be available for people to escape the heat.
Although the state has seen heat like this before, Tomaro said that this will be the first serious heat wave of the summer season.
“Now, it’s really trying to get the word out effectively to the public about the conditions that are here and how to stay safe in them,” he said.
Heat index values are expected to range from 100 degrees to 106 degrees on Thursday and between 103 to 110 degrees on Friday.
Tomaro said he wants to encourage residents to be mindful during the extreme heat and utilize community services.
“We really do try to stress what we call cooling centers,” Tomaro said. “We don’t know if that’s the best kind of messaging in terms of people understanding what the means. But there are a lot of public places that are available.”
The forecast indicates that Friday will be the hottest day. The National Weather Service will have updates if the heat wave is expected to last longer.
