There’s a lot to celebrate at this point in the year. The weather is finally warming up, Mothers’ Day is around the corner, and a lot of young people are graduating from high school or college and heading off to new stages in life.
The best reason for a May celebration though is Larry Meiller’s birthday, and this year, his 70th!
Co-workers from Wisconsin Public Radio, Wisconsin Public Television and the Educational Communications Board were joined by many of Larry’s regular guests for a surprise party after Tuesday’s show.

Larry didn’t have any idea, and was very surprised. Besides the usual “Happy Birthday” serenade, Larry was also treated to a special song composed for the occasion. Rebecca Dopart, director of membership and business sponsorships for WPR, wrote a wonderful song about Larry set to Billy Joel’s “Piano Man.” Dopart played the piano and everyone sang. There were more than a few moist eyes in the room.
Of course, no birthday party is complete without a cake. After a few words from producer Judith Siers-Poisson and Larry, everyone enjoyed a sweet treat. Nothing, and no one, is as sweet as Larry, though.
